Modling Report 2018
In a tough field of competitors, including fencers from as far afield as the USA, Chile and Argentina, Steph Phennah produced her best performance of the European Cadet Circuit season to finish in 121st position, the 6th best result of the Great Britain girls.
Having being acclimatised to the beautiful city of Vienna, and taking in some of the numerous sights in the preceding few days, the event took place on Sunday 14th January in a modern and well equipped sports complex in Modling, some 40 minuets outside of the City centre.
Despite a somewhat slow first match in her first poule, Steph raised her game to win three out of her six matches, being particularly unlucky to lose out 5-4 in a very competitive match to a talented Hungarian in the final fight of the group.
The second round started well, with a confident 5-3 victory over a Greek competitor from her first poule. However, a few unforced errors crept into her fencing and this was compounded by some tough opposition, leading to a one up- five down record. Although Steph was competitive throughout this stage, scoring hits and making positive actions.
She just missed out on the cut to the direct elimination stage by four places, and on reflection the cut was very makeable. Despite this Steph fenced very well throughout the day, representing Wrexham superbly yet again. Her hard work and preparation prior to the competition clearly delivered results, and this was a great way to round off the cadet international season. Steph is looking forward to building from this performance and continuing her progress through the domestic season ahead.
